In 2017, the UNHCR officially recognised statelessness as an issue that affects minorities. 3/4 of the world’s stateless population are indeed recognised as minorities. UN Special rapporteur on Minority Issues, Fernand de Varennes, talks about the extent of this crisis and its challenges. He shares his worries over the situation in Assam, India, as 1.9 million people risk being made stateless. The UN rapporteur also discusses the deprivation of citizenship as a tool of exclusion for national, linguistic and ethnic minorities.
