The International Observatory of Human Rights, a non-profit NGO based in the UK is launching a new initiative focusing on the issue of radicalisation and extremism on Monday, 30th April 2018.
Young people around the world are being recruited by terrorist networks on a daily basis. These people are misled and radicalised, and end up committing gruesome violent acts while fighting in places like Syria, Iraq, Somalia and Afghanistan.
IOHR’s new initiative, “Not Born A Radical”, addresses the root causes of radicalisation and provides a progressive platform for educating and empowering the youth and engaging returning fighters and prisoners seeking a path to rehabilitation.
IOHR has partnered with Hanif Qadir, a reformed Islamic extremist, a leading expert on de-radicalisation and Chief Executive of the Active Change Foundation. He has been assisting international organisations and governments to utilise his field experience and moderate theological views to improve and initiate programmes that aim to prevent and counter radicalisation and extremism.
To break out of the cycle of violence dominating our news headlines and threatening our security, IOHR is bringing together experts, practitioners, academics and former extremists. They will share policy-relevant knowledge, research and expertise in real time and explore relevant pathways by which the global, regional and national policies can offer the opportunity to prevent radicalisation and improve response to fighters returning home. The day long conference will comprise of presentations, panel discussions and a post-conference workshop to produce a policy paper seeking better practices and recommendations.
As part of the initiative, IOHR is also launching its international prison visit programme seeking an opportunity to conduct, collect and analyse motivational and societal factors causing extremism. This includes main recruitment methods used by international terrorist organisations, with the objective to design strategies for preventing radicalisation and rehabilitating and reintegrating individuals into society.
