Sonia ‘Sunny’ Jacobs was sentenced to death for a crime she did not commit and spent 17 years in prison. She was exonerated in 1992 but this reprieve came too late for her husband who was executed in 1990 by a faulty electric chair. He took 13 minutes to die. Sunny explains that her experience is that “freedom isn’t free” and hence why she founded The Sunny Center, a rehabilitation centre for wrongly convicted people like her.
