The Good, The Rights, and The Ugly

How do attacks on press freedom in Bulgaria and Hungary infringe EU’s fundamental values?

Reporters Without Borders has recently released their annual World Press Freedom Index, showing a dangerous decline in media freedom across Central and Eastern Europe. In the two European countries at the bottom – Hungary and Bulgaria, attacks on journalists and media censorship are a regular occurrence.

What are the main threats to press freedom and how can the EU defend one of its most fundamental values?

Host Wade McElwain is joined by Pavol Szalai, head of the EU Balkans desk at Reporters without Borders, Georgi Gotev, Bulgarian journalist and a Senior Editor at EURACTIV, and Agnes Urban, Media Analyst with the Hungarian media watchdog Mertek Media Monitor.

The Good, The Rights, and The Ugly is an International Observatory of Human Rights production.
