Bee-Lieve Part I: Honey as Livelihood for Women

In Ethiopia’s parched village of Myquiha, Abeba, a mother of 8 children, has found an alternative and sustainable way of supporting her family: beekeeping.

The Tigray region has been devastated by climate change-induced droughts in recent years, and many traditional forms of livelihood have become impossible. BEE-LIEVE, a project funded by the EU and OXFAM, is helping 12,000 Ethiopian women and landless youth to make a living through beekeeping.

Honey is a cultural symbol in Ethiopia, and this business has huge potential: Tigray’s distinctively white honey is in demand across the world.
